Announcing the Top Rated Data Center Backup Software for 2018

Today, we awarded the 2018 TrustRadius Top Rated badges for Data Center Backup Software. The TrustRadius Top Rated awards are unique in that they are an unbiased reflection of customer sentiment, based solely on user satisfaction scores. They are not influenced by analyst opinion, the vendor’s company size, popularity, site traffic, or status as a TrustRadius customer.

As data centers grow in complexity, data center backup software is increasingly crucial. Modern data backup solutions must be virtualization-aware, and have data protection that covers physical/virtual servers, databases, enterprise applications including SaaS products, mobile endpoints and public infrastructure platforms. Modern data center backup tools typically utilize the cloud, backing up encrypted data automatically, which is de-duped before being stored in a secure location.

The following products are all broadly similar, if not identical. Beyond core backup and replication functionality, vendors sometimes create additional differentiation around factors like cost, usability, and quality of customer service and support.

Here are the winners:

Overall Top Rated

Veeam Backup & Replication

Veeam Backup & Replication Software is a data center backup solution providing recovery and protection of data for virtual, physical, and cloud workloads. Users praise the speed and simplicity of the backup creation process, and the product cost-effectiveness.

“Veeam Backup & Replication is our preferred tool for backing up virtual machines. It provides efficient, reliable, and cost effective backups of virtual machines without being overly complicated. I can teach a new admin how to use it effectively within 30 minutes. You can’t really say that for most other backup software. We use it company-wide, as it simply offers an excellent mix of efficacy and cost effectiveness.”

Kurt Ferguson | Lead Desktop Analyst | Fidelity & Guaranty Life

CommVault backs up databases, files, applications, endpoints and VMs according to data type and recovery profile. CommVault allows users to integrate hardware snapshots, optimize storage with deduplication, recover data quickly and easily, and leverage reports to continuously improve backup/recovery processes. Reviewers agree that the level of detail in CommVault’s reporting and dashboards is one of its strongest features.

CommVault is used to back up our entire physical and virtual server environment. We use the software to back up a plethora of software suites, such as SAP, AIX, MSSQL, SharePoint, and MS Server 2008-2012. We use many of the features inside of CommVault for business reporting of backups and performance metrics. We are also replicating this data to a disaster recovery site.”

Jim Stephanek | Commvault Engineer | Bridgestone Americas

NAKIVO Backup & Replication

NAKIVO Backup & Replication is a VM backup solution designed to protect VMware, Hyper-V, and AWS EC2 environments, offering advanced features that increase backup performance, improve reliability, and speed up recovery saving organizations money and resources. According to many reviewers, one of NAKIVO’s key strengths is the speed of backup creation, and the convenience of replicating to remote sites.

“We are using NAKIVO to backup our VMWare guests to an onsite NAS and also to replicate business critical VMWare guests to an offsite VMWare environment at a local data centre for disaster recovery and business continuity purposes. This allows us to have local backups of our servers and in the event of a major problem at our business office we can quickly be up and running from our remote site.”

Richard Davies | Senior Technical Consultant | Miracle Information Services Ltd

Barracuda Backup

Barracuda Backup is designed to protect data in on-premise, virtual, cloud-hosted, and SaaS environments, and to replicate the data to the Barracuda Cloud, Amazon Web Services or a private location of the user’s choice. Users praise the ease-of-use and the simplicity of adding data sources and setting retention policies.  Customer support team is also responsive and helpful.

“The cloud control is great!! I’m able to restore files and folders from basically any machine on the Internet. I can restore either the local machine I’m using at the time, or directly to the server from which it came.”

Dustin Williams | Network Administrator | Millar Instruments, Inc.

Carbonite EVault

Carbonite EVault provides end-to-end encryption that protects confidential data. EVault makes it easy to deploy a comprehensive disaster recovery strategy for virtual, physical, cloud, or hybrid model environments. Users praise the disaster recovery tools and quick-restore capabilities.

We currently use Carbonite EVault as our backup and disaster recovery system. It is being used as an organization-wide system. It addresses the need to have quick restores for those files that no one knows how they disappeared, while also addressing the need to have your data stored elsewhere in the event of an emergency.”

Timika Hite | Senior IT Analyst | City of Lancaster

Carbonite Server Backup

Carbonite Server Backup recovers anything from single files to a complete system, and can protect any type of file on physical and virtual servers, NAS, SAN and external hard drives. The platform offers easy configuration and scheduling of automated backups that can be sent to local, cloud, or hybrid backup targets. A key strength of the software, according to many reviewers, is the intuitive design and ease-of-use for backup creation.

I use Carbonite Server Backup across our entire organization. I needed backup of files that I could easily verify and let work through the night. I wanted to use a product that was easy to manage because my time is very limited but I know from experience that it is very important to everyone in our operation that we have a solid backup plan.”

Danny Cockrell | Technology Director | Summit Christian Academy

Veeam Availability Suite

Veeam Availability Suite is a combination of two Veeam products: It contains all of the Veeam Backup & Replication capabilities for recovery and protection of data for virtual, physical, and cloud workloads. It also includes the monitoring, reporting and capacity planning capabilities of Veeam One. This is Veeam’s flagship product.

On the infrastructure team, we use it quite a bit to monitor our Veeam solution. It’s great to be able to have one program to control and set up our backups and ensure that everything went correctly. We get emails every day on how the nightly backups did and whether or not there is anything to look at.”

Steven Tom | Public Safety Systems Engineer | Ada County Sheriff’s Office
