What is telephony & VoIP software?

Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology eliminates the need for conventional landlines and makes it possible to transmit voice, video, and media communications through an internet connection by using your smartphone, tablet, laptop, or VoIP conference phone. VoIP is the underlying technology that powers Unified Communications systems, which provide a fully integrated internal communication structure across phone, IM or chat, mobile, conferencing, screen and file sharing, email, etc.

Trends in telephony & VoIP

VoIP has rapidly gained popularity for business use due to the convenience, mobility, and flexibility it provides and is positioned to continue evolving this year. Due to an ever-growing mobile and remote workforce, there are more people and more devices connected to one another. This could easily cause strain on networks and lead to glitches, slow connectivity, or limited use of data-driven features for mobile VoIP.

VoIP providers will likely be focused on ways they can minimize strain, and ensure that the services they offer are functioning at top quality and speed for the businesses that rely on them for business communications. Luckily, the fifth generation of high-speed mobile connection and data sharing is on the horizon. Although networks do not anticipate that 5G will be officially released until 2020, several carriers have announced plans to begin testing the new network speed and capabilities at the end of 2017. 5G is estimated to be ten times faster than current network speeds, which will drastically change data sharing capabilities for VoIP users.

Another feature to watch in this area is continuity, or the ability to begin communications on one device and stream them over to another with no drops or interruptions. Currently, development of this device sharing technology is being led by Apple, but it will be interesting to see how other companies innovate to address this need.

Choosing the right telephony & VoIP software

VoIP phone systems provide a convenient, flexible, and often less expensive option for small companies, while more advanced UCaaS solutions are often used at the enterprise level because they create a centralized (and centrally administered) communication portal where employees can securely access voice, chat, and video tools in one system.

Both VoIP and UC integrate with other business systems related to contact management, such as your CRM or contact center software, to further streamline your communication. Using reviews in your research gives you authentic feedback from other companies with uses cases like your own — in terms of company size, employee count, communication needs, and existing technology environment. This can help you make the decision about which VoIP or UC software will work best for your business.

Top Rated Criteria

Products included in the 2018 Top Rated Telephony & VoIP Software list must have been in the top tier of their category TrustMap on April 27, 2018, to earn a Top Rated badge. To qualify for the Telephony & VoIP Software TrustMap, products must have 10 reviews and ratings on TrustRadius. Every reviewer is verified and every review is vetted before publication.
