What is Disaster Recovery Software?

Disaster recovery software helps businesses get back to normal as fast as possible after a disaster. These tools maintain replicas of a business’ data, applications, and virtual machines. When a natural or man-made disaster affects the network, disaster recovery tools can activate the replica. This keeps the system functioning normally while IT teams address the disaster.

Most disaster recovery software is capable of restoring from replicas. Although a business can maintain replicas on-site, many vendors also offer cloud-based hosting. Disaster recovery tools often include data center backup features like deduplication and file compression. Other features include support for both automatic and planned failover, failover testing, recovery verification, and data encryption. With the introduction of GDPR, it’s also become important for disaster recovery tools to manage GDPR data properly in the event of a disaster.

Buyers of disaster recovery software should consider their IT capabilities and uptime needs. Some businesses may have limited IT resources and can afford a few hours of downtime. They may need offsite storage, but might not care about automatic or one-click recovery. Other businesses may have plentiful IT resources and a low tolerance for system downtime. These buyers may keep both on-site and cloud-based replicas with comprehensive testing features.
