What is ERP software?
ERP software handles all the resources required to make ship and account for customer orders. It does this by integrating all the information flowing through the various departments of a large complex organization. This involves many different processes such as:
- Inventory
- Manufacturing
- Supply Chain
- Backend Finance and Accounting
- Human Resources
- Front End Service and Sales
The entire data flow across these functions is enabled by a central database. All functions see precisely the same data. Additionally, the shared database eliminates re-keying of critical data. For example sales orders flow automatically into the financial system.
Trends in ERP
While ERP technology has a decades-long history of supporting the manufacturing industry, ERP has undergone some significant changes over the last few years with several emerging trends.
The advent of cloud computing has greatly simplified complex software deployment since, unlike on-premise software, cloud software does not require a trained internal IT staff, or maintenance and patching. There are also some advantages to cloud ERP in terms of performance and capabilities. For example, cloud ERP software provides real-time data that is available to employees at all times via mobile devices. Although the ERP sector is still dominated by on-premise solutions, this is beginning to change.
For many small and medium-sized businesses multi-tenant, cloud ERP is a real option. For smaller companies, the total cost-of-ownership for a cloud-based system is likely to be lower than for on-premise software, because of lower costs of implementing and maintaining the software. Cloud ERP software designed for SMBs is becoming more of an option as the range or product options increases and worries about cloud security diminish.
Choosing the right ERP software
ERP is now a very broad category that has expanded beyond its manufacturing and distribution legacy, and with the emergence of cloud solutions, it can provide value to companies of all sizes. Reviews can be an important part of product research and due diligence as they allow buyers to understand which products best suit their unique environments.
Top Rated Criteria
Products included in the 2018 Top Rated ERP Software list must have been in the top tier of their category TrustMap on April 27, 2018, to earn a Top Rated badge. To qualify for the ERP Software TrustMap, products must have 30 reviews and ratings on TrustRadius. Every reviewer is verified and every review is vetted before publication. Products are plotted on the map based on end-user data, including users’ likelihood to recommend scores as well as buyer research patterns.
