commvault-complete-data-protection-vs-zerto-virtual-replication

June 26th, 2020 3 min read

Commvault Complete Backup & Recovery and Zerto are both used by many businesses to restore and protect sensitive business data.  Commvault Backup & Recovery is a data center backup solution designed to completely backup business data from databases to virtual machines.  In contrast, Zerto is a disaster recovery software that limits the risk of losing data from cloud and on premise applications.

Features

Commvault Complete Backup & Recovery and Zerto both offer data backup tools, but they also have a few standout features that set them apart from each other.

Commvault Complete Backup & Recovery provides enterprise level features for eliminating data silos, encrypting sensitive data, and replicating virtual machine states.  For businesses looking for analytics, Commvault Complete Backup & Recovery provides detailed reporting on the data it is securing. Lastly, Commvault Backup & Recovery provides responsive customer support for organizations that need assistance.

Zerto is a dedicated disaster recovery software, it is able to support a wide variety of virtual machines and a large amount of business data. Zerto offers a simple to use interface that new users will quickly be able to use to snapshot or restore data in case of a disaster. In addition to being simple to use, Zerto is also easy to implement, so businesses with limited resources can make use of it without significant support.

Limitations

Though Commvault Complete Backup & Recovery and Zerto both help businesses prevent data loss, they also have a few limitations that are important to consider.

Commvault Complete Backup & Recovery provides features for data replication and encryption, but it isn’t a dedicated disaster recovery tool.  Businesses that are looking primarily for disaster recovery may prefer a dedicated option where they won’t have to pay for additional features.  Many users also find Commvault Complete Backup & Recovery to be tricky to implement and use without training, so businesses should expect users to need some training.

Zerto is a dedicated disaster recovery choice, which makes it a great choice for businesses seeking disaster recovery features, but it isn’t as complete a data backup tool as Commvault Complete Backup & Recovery.  Additionally, While Zerto provides significant documentation for using the software, users are not as positive about the customer support experience compared to Commvault Complete Backup & Recovery.

Pricing

Zerto and Commvault Complete Backup & Recovery do not provide exact pricing details, but interested businesses can reach out to the vendor for a quote. Both software options offer a free trial that businesses can use before making a purchasing decision.
