Microsoft-Power-BI-vs-TIBCO-Spotfire

September 25th, 2020 3 min read

Microsoft Power BI and TIBCO Spotfire are both business intelligence and data analytics platforms that help provide organizations with data-backed insights to improve decision making and forecasting.

Microsoft Power BI is more focused on the ad-hoc querying of datasets and has powerful data slicing and dicing tools. TIBCO Spotfire, on the other hand, primarily focuses on serving companies that need to analyze extremely large datasets with the aid of AI and machine learning technology. On TrustRadius, both Microsoft Power BI and TIBCO Spotfire are popular among midsize businesses and enterprise organizations.

Features

Microsoft Power BI and TIBCO Spotfire are similar in many ways, but each has a few standout features.

Since Power BI is part of the Microsoft ecosystem of products and services, users who are comfortable with other Microsoft products (especially Microsoft Office) will likely have little trouble adjusting to Power BI. Another major plus of Power BI is that it is available for free for individual users. This allows users without business accounts to learn and practice with the software on their own time, with their own projects. Another feature offered by Microsoft Power BI is the ability to use custom data visualizations downloaded from Microsoft Marketplace, further expanding the capabilities of the tool.

TIBCO Spotfire has recently received upgrades that are meant to address many of the issues customers had reported with the platform. The newest version, named Spotfire X, offers new data visualization capabilities that provide more robust mapping and charting features along with higher resolution graphics. Spotfire X also offers advanced AI-driven data recommendations so users can spend less time figuring out how to compare and present their findings. The newest release of Spotfire also offers natural language processing capabilities that allow users to create charts, find data sources, and command the program through the search bar.

Limitations

Before investing in either platform, each has a few limitations that potential buyers should consider.

Businesses using Microsoft Power BI that want to keep their data in-house and off of Microsoft’s servers will have to upgrade to the premium version of the software. Power BI is also very strict in terms of how it handles table joins in a database. This can lead to problems for users who need multiple joins from a single table. TrustRadius users also report some issues with performance when trying to manipulate extremely large datasets.

TIBCO Spotfire is a complex program that takes time for new users to fully master. Because it is not as widely used as Power BI, it may be harder to find quick answers on user communities/forums or when searching the web. However, TrustRadius users report that TIBCO offers excellent support and in-person training to help resolve these issues. Some users also mention a lack of data connectors compared to its competitors which may cause some customers to look elsewhere.

Pricing

Microsoft Power BI offers paid plans for business users and a free version for personal use. Pricing for the business plans starts at $9.95 per user per month for Power BI Pro. For businesses that need more advanced functionality, Power BI Premium is available starting at $4,995 per year. Enterprise organizations will need to request a consultation for full pricing options.

TIBCO Spotfire offers a multitude of pricing structures based on the number and type of business needs. Interested buyers can request a quote from the vendor.
