microsoft-teams-vs-monday

October 3rd, 2020 4 min read

Microsoft Teams is a collaboration tool designed to improve group or workplace communications while monday.com is a project management software that allows teams to work collaboratively to set and achieve goals.

Microsoft Teams is a popular choice for businesses that use Office 365 products. It is packaged in with the Office 365 suite and syncs up well with other Microsoft technologies. monday.com allows users to automate repetitive tasks and offers visualizations so users can spend more time working towards their objectives.

Both Microsoft teams and monday.com are excellent choices for businesses of all sizes thanks to their low starting prices, however only Microsoft Teams has a free version available and monday.com’s pricing model may make it less appealing to some prospective users.

Features

Microsoft Teams and monday.com both provide collaborative abilities, but each also has unique features that set them apart.

Microsoft Teams includes a robust chat service that allows users to communicate quickly without setting up a conference. Syncing with Office 365 also makes collaboration easy by allowing file sharing and calendar support as well as integrations with other Microsoft applications. Teams works on all iOS and Windows platforms and Users also enjoy how easy it is to share files and messages in the application.

monday.com has a modern and vibrant user interface that makes staying organized easy. monday.com allows users the ability to create boards to track project plans and offers a large number of templates to make organizing people and tasks easier. It also features built-in analytics through dashboards and charts for workload management and KPI tracking. monday.com also offers integrations with major third-party apps such as Slack, Gmail, Mailchimp, and many more.

Limitations

Microsoft Teams loses some of its utility if a business is not using the Microsoft suite of office software. Users mention a lack of customization for notifications as a drawback. Some users have also had issues with statuses (offline, away, busy, etc.) from Outlook syncing correctly.

monday.com is limited slightly by which service tier a business uses. Some features are not available unless you step up to a higher tier. Some users doubt monday.com’s capabilities for large businesses and find that large projects may become unwieldy in the platform. Users also mention that while the charts and graphs are great, they lack the ability to drill down and see the root of some problems. There have also been complaints about monday.com’s pricing model. Users are added in five-person increments so if you need to add a person and you go over the limit you will have to pay for five more people instead of just one.

Pricing

Microsoft Teams is included in Office 365, which has a free version for non-business use and three paid pricing tiers. The cheapest option is $5 per user per month and includes a small number of Office services including Teams and SharePoint. The Office 365 Business Premium plan costs $12.50 per user per month and includes the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, etc.). Lastly, the Microsoft 365 Business Plan costs $20 per user per month and includes advanced security protection. All Microsoft Team’s plans require an annual commitment.

monday.com has no free version and offers four pricing tiers. The Basic package starts at $8 per user per month and provides access to the software, unlimited free viewers, and 5GB of storage. The Standard package is $10 per user per month and offers many more features like email integration and 50GB of storage. The Pro package starts at $16 per user per month and offers private boards, more automation, Google authentication, and 100GB of storage. Finally, the Enterprise tier offers all the features of the lower tiers with the addition of 99.9% uptime guaranteed, audit logs, single sign-on, and 24/7 support. For specific pricing of the Enterprise tier, users will need to contact the vendor.
