qualtrics-vs-surveymonkey

August 26th, 2020 3 min read

At their core, both Qualtrics and SurveyMonkey are survey platforms that allow users to reach out and gather input from people.

Qualtrics is a robust survey platform targeted towards organizations that collect large amounts of data and need many different types of tools to analyze that data. SurveyMonkey is a well-regarded survey tool that focuses on ease of use and the ability to make surveys quickly.

Qualtrics is more likely to appeal to large, enterprise style businesses that are willing to invest time in training users to gather data using a premium product. While SurveyMonkey has an enterprise service tier, it is more likely to appeal to individuals and small to medium-sized organizations. This is due to the product’s expanded free and less costly options and focus on quick usability.

Features

Qualtrics and SurveyMonkey both support the distribution and collection of surveys but are differentiated by a number of features.

Qualtrics offers more advanced reporting options with complex analytics capabilities built into the platform. During survey creation, there are also more options to create branches of questions based on logic and more logic choices than found in competitors. Users also speak highly of Qualtrics support and report having little trouble reaching someone if needed.

SurveyMonkey focuses on getting users up to speed quickly and a main draw to the platform is the ease of use for novice survey creators. SurveyMonkey can also be easily paired with 3rd party software. Data can be easily exported to dedicated analysis software and goals can be set up with CRM platforms to send surveys based on milestones or if certain criteria are met. Lastly, SurveyMonkey has a forever free option for individuals who only need limited survey capabilities.

Limitations

Qualtrics and SurveyMonkey offer great capabilities, but both have a few limitations that businesses should consider.

Qualtrics’ depth may lead to a steeper learning curve for users who are unfamiliar with enterprise-grade software. Some users have reported that there can be problems or glitches with getting surveys to show up correctly on mobile devices. Some organizations may also consider Qualtrics’ pricing a downside due to its much higher price of entry.

SurveyMonkey may offer an easier learning experience, but it can lack some deeper logic-based question branching features. SurveyMonkey also can’t upload as many file types into a survey. Some users also report that complex survey questions can be difficult to create due to the simplicity of the creator.

Pricing

SurveyMonkey offers several different pricing tiers depending on an organization’s needs. The Free tier allows users to experience the basic tools of the service for free. The Team Advantage Plan is $25 per user per month and includes expedited email support, better controls over who can view and edit, and additional analysis features. The Team Premier plan is $75 per user per month and adds the ability to have multilingual surveys and sentiment analysis. To obtain price estimates for the Enterprise tier of SurveyMonkey you must reach out to the vendor. This tier gives you the option to integrate with 3rd party apps, singly sign-on capability, and a dedicated customer success manager.

Qualtrics also offers a free tier, but with limited tools and conditions. Detailed pricing on the  Enterprise tier account is available by requesting a quote from the vendor.
