veeam-backup-replication-vs-zerto-virtual-replication

May 15th, 2020 3 min read

Veeam Backup and Replication and Zerto both backup and protect important business data to prevent data loss. Veeam Backup and Replication is a data center backup software used often by small to mid-sized businesses. In contrast, Zerto is a disaster recovery software used most often by mid-sized to large enterprises.

Features

Veeam Backup and Replication and Zerto both provide key data protection features such as data recovery and a variety of integrations, but they also have a few unique features that set them apart from each other.

Veeam Backup and Replication was originally developed to backup virtual machines by snapshotting them for back up or replication. Veeam Backup and Replication still performs this functionality efficiently and in a way that can be automated to save time for users. This is ideal for users that don’t need snapshots more than a few times per day. Veeam Backup and Replication also provides a large amount of data storage, which is useful for organizations looking to use the software for data storage and protection rather than only disaster recovery. Additionally, at higher pricing tiers Veeam Backup and Replication includes analytics and reporting features.

Zerto backs up virtual machines constantly, meaning that in case of disaster, mere seconds of data are lost. This is ideal for businesses that are constantly creating new data that would be difficult to recreate exactly. Zerto is also very simple even for non-technical staff. The software allows users to deploy backups to production at a single click of a button.

Limitations

Though Veeam Replication and Backup both have robust data protection and disaster recovery tools, they also have a few limitations that are important to consider.

Veeam Backup and Replication creates snapshot-based backups, this means that if you snapshot your virtual machines each hour, after a disaster you could potentially lose an hour of data. For businesses constantly generating new important data, there is less risk of data loss using Zerto. Veeam is also not as simple to use as Zerto, and users may require more training, particularly if they are not all technical staff.

Zerto constantly backs up virtual machines, but this is an expensive process that may be unnecessary for organizations that can manage their data using snapshots. Additionally, Zerto has powerful disaster recovery features, but Veeam provides some additional storage features for non-virtual machine data.

Pricing

Veeam Backup and Replication is priced at $1,200.00 per year, though there are less feature-complete options available. The Veeam Backup Starter package is only $400.00 per year but lacks almost all analytics features included in the Veeam Backup and Replication Package. This package will be sufficient for users that only need data backup and recovery features.

Zerto starts at $745.00 per year for its suite of backup features. For additional features, Zerto can provide quotes to interested businesses.
